Talking Tags (Availability: March 2007) TalkingTags helps people with visual impairments quickly identify and find items and locations at home, school or work. There are two types of tags provided with the TalkingTags system: 1) RFID tags are placed on everyday items or locations which play a personal pre-recorded message when brought into proximity of the TalkingTags watch. 2) Beeper tags are small, wireless devices that can be attached to various items or locations. These items or locations enable the user to use their ears to locate the beeping sound, produced by simply telling TalkingTags to make this item ‘beep’. TalkingTags greatly increases the individual’s sense of freedom and independence, and helps them become more efficient in orienting themselves in the environment as well as finding and identifying objects. Up to three levels of information can be associated with an RFID tag to indicate what the item is, how it is to be used, prepared or combined with other objects, or where it is located. Early results from field trials have been very positive. Many individuals have commented that the |
TalkingTags system will enable them for perhaps the first time to conveniently recognize items and their placement without having to commit a daunting breadth of information to memory. This approach will directly enhance independence and facilitate increased productivity for users in both workplace and educational settings, as well as have a significant impact on normal activities of daily living. Unlike barcodes, RFID tags are much easier to use. Meanwhile, we have simplified the process for recording a personal message for each item that an individual would like to tag. The talkingTags device is resembles a slightly larger watch so it can be worn comfortably and taken anywhere (yes, it tells time). Tags can be used in virtually any environment (frozen food, clothing in laundry). Special waterproof tags are insensitive to changes in temperature and humidity. All tags are reusable. Simply erase and re-record a new message. The TalkingTags device comes complete with:
An optional Barcode reader and barcode database is available to help transfer information referenced via the product’s barcode to the TalkingTags description. Also, you get free access to the TalkingTags Database (TTDB). This Internet-based service enables TalkingTags users to share information on the location of tagged items and locations in various facilities, buildings and public areas with other TalkingTags users.
