SafetyNet (Availability: March 2007) SafetyNet is a network (the Net in SafetyNet) of small intelligent sensors that enables supported independence and safety for people with cognitive disabilities. SafetyNet empowers people to live independently, without the risk of accidentally burning down the house because the space heater or stove was left on too long. SafetyNet is the first system designed specifically for this audience that has the ability to: 1) detect the status of specific factors in the environment, and then 2) dynamically adjust the delivery of task prompts to properly coach the individual with a cognitive disability based on these factors. This greatly facilitates freedom and independence without compromising safety. The built in natural support mechanisms promote independence, enhance self-esteem, and create opportunities for self-direction in a respectful, non-invasive approach. Activities of daily living can be accomplished without assistance and without compromising safety. |
