SafetyNet

SafetyNet enables an individual with a cognitive impairment to live more independently through a set of natural supports that serve to remind them of situations in their home that need their attention.  A network (the 'Net' in SafetyNet) of small, battery-powered, wireless sensors detect when items in the home fall outside a set of pre-determined 'safe' profiles, and then prompt the individual on how to rectify the situation.  For example, typical situations that can be detected are: 1) the refrigerator door has been open for too long, 2) the bathtub water has been running for too long, and 3) the front door was just opened, but nobody pressed the door bell, and the space heater is still on.  In this third example, the system might stimulate the individual with a series of pictures and audio prompts such as: "If you are going to leave, be sure to turn off the space heater first".

Due to the complexities and expertise required to serve people with
cognitive impairments, we collaborate with AbleLink Technologies when
addressing this population.
